Yogurt StandardsNMPF Submits Comments to FDA Regarding Changes to Yogurt Standards of Identity In a March 31, 2009 letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), NMPF agreed with FDA's Proposed Rule to change the Yogurt Standards of Identity. The rule would specifically revoke the standards for lowfat yogurt and nonfat yogurt as well as update the standard for yogurt. NMPF stated that, overall, the proposal appeared to allow for appropriate technological advances in the manufacture of yogurt while still protecting the basic nature of yogurt and promoting honesty and fair dealing in the interest of consumers. Modernizing the standard of identity for yogurt to permit flexibility and allow for technological advances is a necessary step for FDA to make. |
